40 Years Later the Message is Still Partially Eclipsed: Alcohol and Pregnancy Do Not Mix

Day 81 of 99 Days to FASDay and the big news today is the solar eclipse. For some of us the sun will completely be eclipsed, for others it will only be a partial.

And it seems fitting today’s message is related to the fact that still, 40 years after Drs Jones and Smith identified Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, many people still remain in the dark about the effects of not only drinking during pregnancy, but also prior to conception – for both males and females.

Day 83 of 99 Days to FASDay

Binge Drinking on Canadian College and University Campuses

Day 83 of 99 Days to FASDay continues a brief focus on alcohol and drinking habits, with the results from a 2016 survey of over 43,000 students in Canada.

This is of particular interest to myself as the maiden starts College in September. She not only moved from a small town to a city this summer, she will be attending College with more students older than her, than younger. And all of them age of majority. While I have been lucky so far as she does not drink alcohol, there is trepidation as she may want to experiment.

I’m sure all parents are concerned as their children enter adulthood and go off to college or university, but as the parent of a young adult with FASD my concerns and fears are amplified for many reasons. Her vulnerability puts her at heightened risk…
